This type of hydroculture allows plant roots to be in direct contact with a nutrient solution and also have oxygen.

What is a hydroponic system?

This is a structure such as a tray, A-frame or tower that holds an inert medium or water and provides a place to grow plants.

There are different types of hydroponic systems which can meet individual needs of plants. However, each system has to have three essential ingredients for plant growth.

These are oxygen, water/moisture, and nutrients. Hydroponics systems can be classified into the following two categories.

Solution culture: In this hydroponic system, a nutrient-filled solution is provided for the plant roots to grow directly in. It is also known as liquid culture.

Aggregate culture: In this hydroponic system, a medium such as sand, small clay pellets or gravel is provided for the roots to grow in.

How to Grow Hydroponic System Steps by step Tutorial

You can learn how to make a hydroponic garden by following the steps below.

      1. Decide what you want to grow: You will need to decide what to grow and then buy the hydroponic seeds. Buying seeds will let you be in full control of what to grow. You can also decide to buy seedlings from a hardware or plant store.
      2. Start your seeds: After deciding how many of each plant you want to grow you will need to start your seeds. This is done by covering them with a plate and putting them in a spot that is warm. You can label the seeds if they are different. Ideally, you should start the hydroponic seeds 3-5 days before you begin building your hydroponic system. You can also use a seedling heating mat.
      3. Choose a location: You should choose the location of your hydroponic garden and estimate the size needed. You should consider the type of seeds you are planting and the recommended spacing.
      4. Marking and spacing: Mark and space holes for the pots to be placed in them. A shade cloth should be put over them for the first 3-4 weeks and in hot climates.
      5. Prepare nutrient solution: Using water and best hydroponic nutrients or fertilizers make up a hydroponic solution to the recommended pH.
      6. Planting your hydroponic seedlings: It is now time to plant your seedlings (self-raised or bought). Carefully take them out of their pots and gently wash away the soil from the roots.
      7. Hydroponics Growing medium: Place the seedlings you have cleaned into the growing medium and into the hydroponic solution.
      8. Monitoring your hydroponic plants: Check on the solution daily and control the chemical balance of water to nutrients since the water usually evaporates.
      9. Growth of your plants: Watch and wait for your hydroponic plants to grow. You should be sure o keep pests away and watch for root rot.
      10. Pruning: Make sure you use best pruning shears to keep plants tidy, manipulate fruit size, and even speed ripening. This technique is used by some farmers but it is optional.
      11. Harvest your grow: Once your plants are ready you can harvest them.
      12. Flushing: After harvesting, you should flush the entire system. Use peroxide to sterilize and copper solutions to kill mold and bacteria.

Why choose to grow plants in a hydroponic system

Hydroponic plants have a higher growth rate than soil plants grown under the same conditions. They also produce greater yields. This can be attributed to the fact that the nutrients are available all the time.

The plants need not produce large roots and they can devote all their energy to producing the crop which results in bigger crops.

Hydroponic plants also have fewer problems with disease, funguses, and bug infestations.

You can grow almost any houseplant, fruit or vegetables such as leeks, garlic, kale, spinach just to mention but a few that you want in your hydroponic garden.

Hydroponic systems are also beneficial to the environment. Hydroponic gardening constantly reuses the nutrient solutions which mean that it uses less water than soil gardening.

Where can I get a hydroponics system?

You can purchase hydroponic systems, hydroponic seeds, hydro grow nutrients, light sources and other components from a variety of hydroponic suppliers.

It is always wise to buy from reputable suppliers who can make recommendations and offer a warranty on the products you buy.

Do it yourself (DIY) hydroponic systems are also an option that you can look into if you want to try out homemade hydroponics gardening.

Can I build my own hydroponic system?

If you are handy with gardening tools then you can learn how to make a hydroponic garden.

The question is which is the best hydroponic system to adopt, keep reading because we'll address that in this post.

You can buy the various components which also include a full grow tent kits at stores and build your own hydroponic system.

Diy hydroponic systems offer the user the freedom of customizing the design to fit the available space and plants being grown.

You will need to use specially designed nutrients for your system which you can buy. You will also need to use hydroponic medium, which are inert, that do not break down quickly.

You can use a hydroponic medium such as small clay rocks, Rockwool, coconut fiber, sand, vermiculite, and perlite.

What about light?

If you decide to build indoor hydroponic system you will need a grow light. This is an artificial light source which emits light appropriate for photosynthesis.

There are different types of grow light kits available such as metal halide, high-pressure sodium bulbs, high output fluorescents, LEDs lightings and compact fluorescents.

You can also choose to grow hydroponically outdoors to make use of natural light. Reflector-Series 600W LED Grow Light Full Spectrum for Indoor Plants Veg and Flower

Hydroponic seed nursery

When sprouting a seed, four main things needed are water, light, oxygen and temperature. You can use a grow tray and dome to create a miniature greenhouse.

Fill the grow tray with clean water or a weak nutrient solution until it is 1/2" full from the bottom.

Ensure there is adequate light and recommended temperature usually 75-90°.  You may also need to use a heating mat if space is cold.

Germinating your hydroponic seeds

Soak your starter cubes in clean water for an hour and then shake out any excess water. Insert 2-4 seeds into each starter cube hole.

Place the starter cube in a nursery. You can opt to use zip lock bags and add extra drops of water. Add water or nutrient solution directly to the tray.

Once the seeds have germinated gradually intensify the plant light. You can do this by moving the lighting closer to the plants each day.

Continue feeding your seedlings with hydroponic nutrients that are properly mixed.

Transplanting your hydroponic seeds

Once the roots start poking out from the starter cube they are ready for transplanting. Depending on the type of plant this can take from 2-4 weeks.

Transfer and cover the starter cube by clearing a small are in the growing media. Water your transplanted seedling with the appropriate nutrient solution for the first few days.

This will allow the seedling's root system to naturally seek out its new nutrient and water source.

Main Types of hydroponic systems

With the right systems of hydroponics you can easily double your crop production.  Below find some of the simple and best hydroponic systems that you can adapt.

  • Wick system

Hydroponic wick system

The simplest type of hydroponic system is the wick system. This system is passive and has no moving parts.

A wick is used to draw the nutrient solution into the growing medium from the reservoir. However, large plants may use the nutrient solution faster than the wick can supply it.

Growing medium that can be used for the wick system includes vermiculite, perlite, coconut fiber and pro-mix among others.

  • Deep Water culture hydroponic system

No products found.

This type of hydroponic system makes use of a platform usually made of Styrofoam that holds the plants.

The platform floats directly on the nutrient solution. An air stone is used to bubble the nutrient solution and supply oxygen to the plant roots. Air is supplied to the air stone by an air pump.

The water culture is a great system for growing fast growing water loving plants such as the leaf lettuce and can be made out of a water tight container. However, the water culture system does not work well with large or long term plants.

  • Ebb & flow hydroponics system

ebb and flow

It is also known as the flood and drain system. This hydroponic system works by using the nutrient solution to temporarily flood the grow tray and then drains the solution.

This system uses a submerged pump connected to a timer. The medium that can be used for the ebb and flow system include gravel, granular rock wool or grow rocks.

The growing medium can be filled in pots to make it easier to move the plants around.

  • Drip systems

drip hydroponic farming

The drip hydroponic system uses a simple operation that requires a timer and a submersed pump.

Once the pump is turned on by the timer, the nutrient solution flows through a small drip line and drips onto the base of each plant. The drip system can be recovery or non-recovery.

Recovery drip system: In this system, a reservoir is usually in place to collect the excess (run-off) nutrient solution for re-use. As this system does not require precise control of watering cycles, an inexpensive timer can be used.

The reservoir requires periodic monitoring and adjustment of nutrient strength levels and pH. Non-recovery drip system: In this system the runoff is not collected.

A precise timer is required to ensure that runoff is minimal and the watering cycles are not interrupted so that the plants get an adequate nutrient solution.

This system does not require adjustment of pH levels because pH and nutrient strength remains constant.

AeroGarden

  • Nutrient Film Technique (N.F.T.)

This type of hydroponic system has a constant flow of nutrient solution. A timer is not required for the submersible pump which pumps the nutrient solution into the growing tray and flows over the plants roots before draining into the reservoir.

This type of system uses air only as a growing medium.

  • Aeroponics

This uses air as the growing medium. The roots are usually hanging in the air and then misted with the nutrient solution every few minutes.

If misting cycles are interrupted the roots dry out and so the system requires a short cycle timer which runs the pump every few minutes. Click here to get the latest prices for an indoor Aeroponics system.

Types of Hydroponic lights Lamp

Different lighting can be used in hydroponics to aid in plant growth. It is important to provide plants everything they need to grow. Light is one of the factors needed and is crucial to plant growth.

Giving your plant all the other variables and not light will make the plant not reach its maximum potential. Light bulbs produce a range of colors. Plants react differently to different color spectrums and certain spectrums provide the best growth for certain plants.

Using the correct spectrum for your plant will ensure you achieve maximum yields.

  • Incandescent lights

These are commonly used as household bulbs and are not efficient for plant growth. They also produce a lot of heat which will make the cost of cooling your plant's increase. Incandescent lights are not recommended in hydroponics.

  • Fluorescent lamps

Hydrofarm Agrobrite FLT24 T5 Fluorescent, 2 Foot, 4 Tube Grow Light System, 2-Feet, Black

These are great for indoor plants. High output bulbs are very efficient and will produce more light while using less electricity.

Fluorescent lamps are available in different spectrums and you can choose the one most ideal for your plant. However, they are not the best for large plants because they do not deeply penetrate.

Compact fluorescent lamps can also be used while ensuring to use reflectors because the light is produced in all directions.

  • High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps

These lamps are up to 8 times more efficient than incandescent lamps and have very high light output. They make use of a special bulb and electronic or mechanical ballast.

Extra ventilation is required when using HID's because they produce a lot of heat. The lights should ideally be hung 2 ft above the plants.

Hydroponics with LED light technology

Light is crucial to hydroponics and the invention of LED light technology has come with great benefits to hydroponics.

LED light has full spectrum lighting and is used to give greenhouses optimum environment for plant growth. Click here to learn more.

In a controlled environment, the technology is used because its effects can be closely monitored and adjustments made to maximize yields.

LED light technology can be used for plants that require different spectrums because the technology can be tailored.

LED's can be used in hydroponics as the main source of light. However, if the environment has sunlight exposure it can be supplemental.

Unlike another form of lighting, LED's do not require reflectors; they direct all of their light to the plant. They can be placed close to the plant because they are less radiant.

How do I choose the best light for my plant?

Budget, size and type of enclosure and ventilation are the factors that need to be considered when buying grow lights.

Fluorescent lamps are best for low budget growers while compact fluorescent lamps are better for small scale growers.

HID lamps produce the highest output and are best for larger plants. Enclosed reflectors are recommended when using HID lights.

It is also ideal to vent the grow space to the outside or a crawlspace when using HID lights. LED's are best for long term growers and will help save money in the long run.

Cascades of Bottles Hydroponics

Hydroponic Using Plastic bottle with lights

Bottles can be recycled and used o grow soilless plants. In most cases, you will need the bottle with the caps on. They should also be clean.

The bottles can be oriented against a vertical wall or hung on strings hanging down in a cascading line. They can also be hung diagonally.

How you orient the cascade of bottles depends on how you want to situate your plants. Access holes should be cut out to allow an area for the plants to sit in.

This can be done by hollowing out on side of the bottle and letting it serve as the irrigation drain.

You can also cut a few air holes to allow the plants to breathe. In this case, the plants are basically enclosed in the bottle. The irrigation tubing should run from one bottle to the next.

You should ensure that the bottles will hold the water in pace while feeding the plant roots. A reservoir is necessary to hold water when it's not being used and a pump will be required to get water to the top.

Dutch Bucket Hydroponic System

Dutch Bucket Hydroponic

Hydroponic Dutch bucket systems are also known as bato bucket systems. They are simple to build and the buckets break the media bed system into smaller components.

This system can allow for each bucket to be set up separately which allows larger crops to be spaced out without wasting the growing medium.

The system is also useful for the management of pests because an infected plant can be removed from the system. It is considered to one of the best hydroponic system and its easy to implement.

Kratky Hydroponic System

Kratky Hydroponic System

This system is great because it allows plant growth without the use of pumps, electricity or wicks. It does not require a reservoir or the addition of nutrients.

A pot is filled with growing medium and placed in a reservoir which is then filled with a specific nutrient solution. Ensure that the nutrient solution does not reach the net pot.

An airstone is added to the system to create bubbles which pop to the water surface. The bubbles hit the growing medium and feed the plant's root system. As the roots grow, they hit the water surface.

The Kratky hydroponic system ensures that your plants never dry out because the growing medium is always wet.

As the plant grows, the water level declines. However, by then the plant roots have descended into the solution of nutrients. More of the root system is exposed to the air ensuring that the plants get adequate oxygen to thrive.
